Stephanie Barrientos lectures at the Institute of Development Policy and Management, University of Manchester. She was previously a Research Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex (2000-7). She gained her BA and PhD in Political Economy at the University of Kent. She has researched and published widely on gender, global production, employment, decent work, international labour standards, corporate social responsibility, fair trade, and ethical trade. She has undertaken research in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the UK. She coordinated a research project on Gender and Ethical Trade in African Horticulture (funded by DFID), coordinated the Ethical Trading Initiative Impact Assessment, and was the European coordinator of an international research programme on the mainstreaming of Fair Trade (funded by Ford Foundation and Leverhulme Foundation). Her published outputs include Ethical Consumption in the Global Food System (co-edited with C. Dolan, Earthscan, 2006) and contributed two chapters to Fairtrade, (co-edited by L. Raynolds, D. Murray and J. Wilkonson, Routledge, 2007). She has advised and provided training for a number of companies, NGOs and international organisations on issues concerning gender, agribusiness, ethical trade, decent work, and impact assessment, including: DFID, DEFRA, ILO, UNCTAD, UNIDO, World Bank, Body Shop, Cadbury Schweppes, CAFDOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, and ActionAid.
Natalie Berg is the grocery research manager at London-based retail research firm Planet Retail. She has spent the past five years analysing global retail trends and today is a regular speaker at industry events in Europe and the US. Natalie's areas of expertise include sustainability, retail consolidation and private labels. She has received a Bachelor of Science in International Business from the University of Connecticut and completed studies at Ecole Supérieure de Commerce in Grenoble, France. Natalie is also a panel member of the UK Sustainable Development Commission.
Colombian economist, MSc in economics and PhD studies at the University of Paris 1 – Pantheón-Sorbonne. Over 10 years of experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies, with a strong interest in poverty issues and development programs. At the moment she is Policy Manager at the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) - the worldwide Fairtrade Standard setting and Certification organisation for Fair Trade.
Moctar Fall – Interface trading
After a short spell with Nestlé Senegal, Mr Moctar Fall was the marketing manager for seven years of the African Network for Integrated Development (RADI), a Pan-African development NGO, where alongside his marketing functions he was responsible for following multilateral trade negotiations (GATT/WTO; UNCTAD, regional agreements).
In 1994 Mr Fall set up his first agricultural research and services firm which became in 2000 the leading distributor of agricultural inputs (seeds, phytosanitary products, fertilisers) in Senegal. Other projects followed in the area of the production of vegetables and fruit for the local market and for export to European markets: France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and also in the processing of fruit and vegetables.
In the area of fair trade, Mr Fall supports organisations of farmers and craftworkers in the production and marketing of their products, in particular on American and Australian markets.
Mr Fall is a founding member of the national section of Transparency International in Senegal. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT) on which he represents the African region.
Liselotte Isaksson works for the European Commission, DG Development and Relations with ACP States.
Holding a degree in economics, she is part of the Economic Development Unit - Infrastructure and communication networks, trade and regional integration. She is in charge of trade and development issues, notably the Aid for Trade initiative and the related EU strategy. Among the issues she worked on, agricultural commodities and EU support as well as environmental aspects of the european development cooperation
Linda McAvan is a Member of the Euroepan Parliament born and brought up in Eccleshill, Bradford. First elected to the European Parliament in 1998, and since June 2007 she is the Vice President of the European Parliament's Socialist Group. Member of the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health & Food Safety Committee, she also serves on the Development Committee, the Joint African, Caribbean and Pacific-European Union Assembly and currently sits on the Temporary Committee on Climate Change. She was the only Labour MEP to sit on the Convention on the Future of Europe which was responsible for drafting the EU Constitution. Linda's special interests include Fair Trade, Brain Disorders and economic regeneration. She holds a BA (Hons.) in Languages, from the Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (1984), as well as an MA in International Relations, from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1990).
Since May 2005, German-born Dr Hansjorg Neun, became Director of CTA. He holds a PhD. in social and economic sciences. He is the author of a thesis on "transfers of technical cooperation development projects to developing countries". With considerable field experience in Africa (especially in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Egypt), Dr Neun has managed projects and major programmes for German and European technical development agencies. He is also skilled in negotiating with governments, donors and international institutions. In addition, he has a wide-ranging knowledge of rural development, food security and natural resource management issues. He also has hands-on experience of agriculture - while still very young he worked on his family's flower and vegetable market garden in Germany.
Before taking the helm at CTA, Dr Neun was employed as Advisor at Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Anja Osterhaus is the coordinator of the Fair Trade Advocacy Office in Brussels. She studied political science in Berlin and Mexico and has been working in different non-governmental organizations, dealing with the challenges of globalisation for development. In 2004, she was given the task to establish the Fair Trade Advocacy Office in Brussels and has since facilitated the development of joint positions and strategies for the international Fair Trade movement at the European and international level.
The Fair Trade Advocacy Office coordinates the advocacy activities of the four main Fair Trade Networks: Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO-I), International Fair Trade Association (IFAT), Network of European Worldshops (NEWS!) and European Fair Trade Association (EFTA). These four networks bring together over one million Fair Trade producers from more than 60 countries, 20 labelling initiatives, hundreds of specialized Fair Trade importers, 3000 worldshops and more than 100,000 volunteers.
Samuel Poos has worked in the fair trade sector for 12 years.
He began his career at Oxfam-Magasins du Monde where he was responsible for relations with producers, while being at the same time a member of the organisation’s management committee.
After having joined the Fair Trade Centre in 2001, he launched the Fair Trade Week, a national campaign to promote this type of trade that respects human rights and the environment.
Since 2005, the Fair Trade Centre has been part of Belgian Technical Cooperation, the Belgian Development Cooperation agency. In this capacity, the Fair Trade Centre has extended its activities, by developing in particular a fair trade observatory as well as a support programme for the marketing of fair trade products. Samuel Poos is currently the Fair Trade Centre’s coordinator.
